About GDC for Women Nalgonda

The Government Degree College for Women, Nalgonda, an erstwhile monumental feather in the cap of that legendary educational seminary, the Osmania University, is now affiliate to the newly established Mahatma Gandhi University, located in the same town of Nalgonda. The college came into existence in the academic year 1977-78 as a result of the yeomen efforts put in by the elite of the town, their sacrificial commitment and devotion, a materialized visualization of a need for promoting women education in this region of a bulkiest rural population. At present the student strength of the college is 2200 on rolls. The main objective of this institution of a great repute is to impart quality education to the students hailing from in and around the town.

Our Library

The idea of the Department of Library and Information Science at our college was first mooted out in 2006. Prior to the occupation of the present building, the library was functioning in a small room. The library has now been functioning in the present building since the academic year 1977-78. It is now serving the needs of the students of the faculty of Science, social Sciences, Humanities and the faculty of Commerce at the Undergraduate level. It is housed in the first floor of the College Administrative Building, with a plinth area of 2500 sft. Presently it has a rich collection of 22,500 volumes consisting of manifold areas of Knowledge. Periodicals numbering about forty including Journals and Magazines, fully automated services with SOUL Software 2.0 Version, and the INFLIBNET N-LIST Access to Electronic resources are the remarkable highlights of the library.

The library provides open access to its collection except rare books. It takes special care to ensure that the entire collection is properly and regularly shelved, library stack are neatly maintained and users get the desired documents without wasting time. The concerned staff has been given the responsibility of maintaining specific number of shelves. Professional staff undertakes shelf rectification at regular intervals.

The library conducts stock verification every five years. The books found in damaged and mutilated condition or found missing are written off as per rules. Although, library does not have a defined policy for weeding out of old, unused and outdated material, it however attempts to segregate and write off such material selectively in consultation with the faculty.

The security of library material is a challenge in an academic institution. The library will have to plan for better solution (CCTV), once the present system has worn out.
